Flexible Circuit Technologies

Flexible Circuit Technologies (FCT) is an electronic interconnection technology that enables the creation of flexible circuits, also known as flex circuits or flexible printed circuit boards (PCBs). These circuits are designed to be bendable, twistable, and foldable, allowing them to conform to various shapes and contours within electronic devices or systems without sacrificing functionality or reliability.

Applications:

  • Flexible displays
  • Flexible sensors
  • Flexible interconnects
  • Flexible PCBs
  • Wearable electronics
  • Medical devices
  • Automotive electronics
  • Aerospace Electronics
  • Industrial automation
  • Compact and portable electronic device

Construction

Flexible circuits are manufactured using multiple layers of flexible substrate materials such as polyimide (PI), polyester (PET), or transparent conductive polyester (ITO) laminated together with conductive traces, insulating layers, and adhesive materials. The conductive traces are made of copper, silver, gold, or conductive inks. These materials combined offer flexibility and resistance to harsh conditions including temperature extremes, vibration, and mechanical stress. The absence of solder joints and mechanical connectors reduces the risk of failure due to solder fatigue, cold joints, and connector wear.

Customizable Design

Flexible circuits can be customized in several ways to meet the requirements of the application.

  • Circuit topology
  • Layout
  • Dimensions
  • Holes
  • Cutouts
  • Component mounting areas

Laser cutting, etching, and additive manufacturing are used to create complex and intricate circuit patterns.

Benefits of Flexible Circuits

Flexible circuits enable the miniaturization of electronic devices by eliminating the need for bulky and rigid PCBs and interconnects. This allows for more compact and lightweight designs, as well as increased packaging density and integration of components.

While flexible circuits may have higher upfront manufacturing costs compared to traditional rigid PCBs, they are more budget friendly in the long run by reducing assembly, packaging, and installation costs while improving product performance and longevity.

Silicone Rubber Keypads

Silicone rubber keypads are input devices used in electronic devices consisting of individual buttons made from a silicone rubber material providing a more tactile interface for users to input commands or selections.

Capacitive Proximity Switch

A capacitive proximity switch is a type of sensor used to detect the presence or absence of objects within close proximity without physical contact. It operates based on the principle of capacitance, which is the ability of two conductive objects to store electrical charge when they are close to each other.
