Silicone Rubber Keypads

Silicone rubber keypads are input devices used in electronic devices consisting of individual buttons made from a silicone rubber material providing a more tactile interface for users to input commands or selections. This material is made of silicone elastomers, which are flexible, durable, and resistant to temperature extremes, moisture, dust, and chemicals. Silicone rubber keypads have conductive carbon or metal contacts beneath each key. When a key is pressed, it makes contact with the conductive pad on the circuit board underneath, completing an electrical circuit and registering the input.

The primary benefit to physical keypads over a touch screen for those who prefer it is the tactile response. Users receive physical feedback or hear a "click" when pressing a key. This tactile response improves the user experience by providing confirmation of input and improving typing accuracy.

Applications

Silicone rubber keypads are used in a variety of electronic devices:

  • Remote controls
  • Calculators
  • Medical devices
  • Industrial control panels
  • Consumer electronics

Customization Options

Silicone rubber keypads can be customized in a variety of ways to increase user-friendliness, meet project requirements, and provide more information.

  • Key Arrangement: Layout can be customized from a standard grid to a completely personalized arrangement.
  • Aesthetic Options: Buttons can vary in size, shape, color, textures, surface finishes, and embossed symbols or icons to match branding or to be more informational.
  • Physical Feedback: Tactile response can be altered using a click, different levels of resistance, etc.
  • Backlighting: Improve visibility in low-light conditions or to enhance the aesthetics of the keypad using LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) positioned beneath the keys and translucent keypads that allow light to pass through.

Flexible Circuit Tech

Flexible Circuit Technologies (FCT) is an electronic interconnection technology that enables the creation of flexible circuits, also known as flex circuits or flexible printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Capacitive Proximity Switch

A capacitive proximity switch is a type of sensor used to detect the presence or absence of objects within close proximity without physical contact. It operates based on the principle of capacitance, which is the ability of two conductive objects to store electrical charge when they are close to each other.
